AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

This course is ideal for those working or intending to work as accounting professionals / support staff in accounts, administration or finance functions.

Candidates study units including Book-keeping, Data Processing, Cost Accounting and Administration in a finance environment with Ethics.

The Certificate in Accounting is part of a three-stage, competency based Education and Training Scheme offered by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the largest dedicated professional body for qualified accounting technicians.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting requires a Total Qualification time of 340 hours and Guided Learning hours of 255 hours.

The course is divided into four units:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping – double entry to trial balance Inc. prompt payment discount

  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls – Cashbook, Petty Cash, Journals and Control Accounts Inc. discrepancies with subsidiary ledgers

  • The Business Environment

  • Understand key business concepts and their practical application

  • Principles of Costing – Principles of basic costing and providing Cost and Revenue information that allows management to plan.

  • Students are assessed through a series of Computer based exams (all marked by the AAT).

    New College Swindon has had many years’ experience of running AAT courses with excellent pass rates which are well above the national average.

    Students are given tutorial support on a regular basis and may take advantage of the many learning facilities that the College has to offer, including internet access and Microsoft 365.

    Entry requirements

    There are no formal entry requirements at this level. Candidates who are employer sponsored – or work in an Accounts Department / Finance sector may directly enrol onto the course without tutor interview. Just complete the enrolment form and take it to Part-Time Admissions.

    AAT recommends that students use AAT Skills check www.aat.org.uk/skillcheck to ensure that they’re ready to start on a particular qualification.

    Please note that all candidates should have a basic working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and basic IT file management techniques. These areas will be assessed on the course – but not taught.

    Additional resources/costs

    You will need to pay an additional registration fee to join AAT, which is for the life of the qualification and is currently £175, You will also need to purchase the course textbooks.

    Future career and study opportunities

    Successful participants will be able to progress to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.

    In addition to the course tuition fee which is £895, prospective students need to be aware of the following extra and approximate costs:

    • To Join AAT, Registration fee £175.

    • This is for the life of the qualification not per annum.

    • Course books approx. £100
