Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Level 2

Carpentry and Joinery is a key trade in the construction industry. You’ll help build and maintain homes, schools, hospitals, and other important buildings. There’s a growing need for skilled carpenters and joiners as construction moves towards modern, sustainable methods.

What Will You Do in This Role?

You’ll work with wood and related materials to create and install building components. This includes:

• Cutting and shaping timber

• Installing doors, staircases, windows, partitions, and flooring

• Building structural elements like roofs and floor joists.

You’ll always work safely, using the right tools and following quality standards.

Two Pathways to Choose From

• Site Carpenter – Works on building sites installing doors, staircases, floors, and roof structures

• Architectural Joiner – Works in a workshop making doors, windows, staircases, and other timber products.

Who Will You Work With?

You’ll collaborate with other trades like bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers, as well as site managers, architects, and clients.

Your Responsibilities

• Use tools and machinery safely under supervision

• Follow plans and specifications

• Produce high-quality work that meets building regulations

What will I learn as part of this apprenticeship programme?

Core Skills for Both Pathways:

• Health, safety, and environmental compliance

• Preparing work areas and selecting tools

• Using and maintaining hand and power tools

• Working to schedules and adapting to changes

• Handling and moving materials safely

• Keeping your work area clean and sustainable

• Continuous professional development.

Site Carpentry Specific:

• First and second fix tasks (including roofs)

• Minor repairs and modifications.

Architectural Joinery Specific:

• Setting out and marking timber

• Using workshop machinery

• Assembling and fitting components.

Your apprenticeship is built around three key areas: Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours.

• Knowledge – Understanding the principles and techniques behind your trade

• Skills – Putting that knowledge into practice through hands-on tasks

• Behaviours – Working professionally, safely, and responsibly in your role.

  Delivery and assessment

  At the end of your qualification, you will complete an EPA which comprises of:

  • An online knowledge test

  • A practical observation

  • A professional review

  Pay and training

  As an apprentice, you’ll be:

  • Entitled to at least the National Minimum Apprenticeship Wage. For more information, visit gov.uk here.

  • Paid for time for training or study as part of your apprenticeship

  • Entitled to holiday pay and other employee rights

  At least six hours per week of your normal working hours must be spent on ‘off the job’ training. Your ‘off the job’ training might happen every week, every month or in a separate block of time.

  Entry requirements

  You must be employed within a relevant job role to undertake the programme. Employers offer apprenticeship vacancies and will set job-specific entry requirements. We can also assist in finding you a suitable employer.

  If you have a current Personal Learning Record (PLR)*, this will be used to establish your eligibility for this apprenticeship programme.

  The entry requirements for this apprenticeship are:

  English; GCSE Grade 2 or equivalent

  Maths; GCSE Grade 2 or equivalent

  You must be able to achieve a minimum of Level 2 in your Initial Diagnostic Assessment to be accepted onto this apprenticeship.

  *PLR is a permanent online record of your qualifications, held by the Department for Education, launched in January 2009. If you achieved your qualifications prior to this date and no longer have your certificates or studied with an organisation based outside of the UK, a suitable assessment process will be undertaken to establish your eligibility for the programme.

  Future career and study opportunities

  You will be able to progress onto a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery and pursue a career in this industry, or head straight into full-time employment.
