Applied Science Level 3

This vocational A Level equivalent is included within the following A Level pathways as a recommended core subject:

  • Environment

  • Geography and Earth Science

  • STEM and healthcare. However, you can take Applied Science with any A Level/equivalent combination, there is plenty of choice and flexibility.

This interesting and practical course offer a specialist work-related programme of study. It covers the key knowledge and practical skills you will need to work within science-based employment.

You will study a combination of core and specialist units, covering a wide range of areas including:

Core Units:

  • Principles and Applications of Science

  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

  • Science Investigation Skills

  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application

  • Principles and Applications of Science

  • Investigative Project

  • Contemporary Issues in Science

Specialist Units: Physiology of Human Body Systems; Medical Physics Applications; Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Astronomy and Space Science; Microbiology and Microbiological techniques (Optional Internally Assessed Unit); Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis.

Entry requirements

For the Extended Certificate you will need at least two grade 4/Cs in Combined Science or grade 4-4 in Core & Additional Science. For the Extended Diploma you will need at least two grade 5s.

Future career and study opportunities

This Applied Science qualification will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills to progress into a scientific role – including an apprenticeship or progression to university.

Work experience/Careers Extra

As part of the Extended Diploma, you will have an opportunity to spend time in the workplace. Our Employability Team will help you find a placement, which will develop your knowledge and skills.

If you take the Extended Certificate work experience is optional. However, both courses will have visits to local science-based companies and employers will come into college to deliver talks and workshops.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and purchase a lab coat and textbook. Contributions may also be required for extra activities and visits you wish to take part in, but costs are kept to a minimum.
