Applied Science Level 3 Extended Diploma BTEC

This course combines hands-on laboratory experience with in-depth scientific theory, providing an engaging and practical approach to learning. Students develop a strong understanding of biological, chemical, and physical sciences while building the technical and analytical skills valued by universities and employers alike.

A total of 13 units across the 2 years

Year 1

  • Principles and Applications of Science I (Exam)

  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (Assignment based)

  • Science Investigation Skills (Exam)

  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application (Assignment based)

  • Physiology of Human Body Systems (Assignment based)

  • Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways (Assignment based)

Year 2

  • Principles and Applications of Science II (Exam)

  • Investigative Project (Assignment based)

  • Contemporary issues in science (Exam)

  • Astronomy and Space Science (Assignment based)

  • Microbiology and Microbiological Techniques (Assignment based)

  • Medical Physics Applications (Assignment based)

23 - Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis (Assignment based)

Entry requirements

5 Good GCSE grades with a 4 in Maths and English, A 5,5 in double award science or 4, 4, 4 in triple science.

Future career and study opportunities

Many of the students who have studied the course progressed on to university courses across the country. The courses included; Biomedical science, Forensic science, Radiography, Nursing, Pharmacy and many more.

Work experience/Careers Extra

Students are expected to carry out a week of work experience each year. Our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.

Additional resources/costs

There is no requirement to purchase PPE since there are laboratory coats and safety spectacles available in all laboratories. However, if you wish to purchase your own they can be easily purchased online. There are course textbooks available for reference in class or on loan from the library. In addition to these students have access to an online textbook which may be accessed through the VLE.
