This is an exciting course that will enable you to develop your animal care and handling skills through an interesting mix of practical sessions, classroom learning and work experience.
From September 2023, you will be learning in our new £2m Animal Management Centre, which includes a variety of animal habitats and spaces for practical demonstrations. You will get hands-on experience with our rare breed farm livestock, exotic animals and growing collection of domestic pets and birds!
Course units are varied, covering all the skills and knowledge you will need to work in the industry.
Topics include: animal health; animal welfare; feeding, accommodating and moving animals; and an introduction to Biology. You will also undertake a work placement, enabling you to further develop your skills in a real industry environment.
Assessments for each unit vary, there are 2 exams, assignments per unit and employer statements . At the end of the year you will take part in a practical synoptic that will assess your practical skills in real life scenarios. Once you have completed your course you will have achieved a fully accredited BTEC qualification at level 2.
If needed you will also have the opportunity to work towards your GCSE English and Maths as part of your study program.
Entry requirements
You will need four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and maths or a Level 1 in Animal Care with Merit or to be recommended by a tutor for the course.
Future career and study opportunities
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management.
Alternatively, you may want to move into an apprenticeship in the industry. Job roles are varied and include: Veterinary Technician, Canine Carer, Dog Groomer, Kennels/Cattery Assistant; Veterinary Assistant or Assistant Dog Trainer.
Work experience/Careers Extra
This programme requires you to complete 75 hours of work experience, giving you the opportunity to practice and further develop your skills in a real, industry environment. Our Employability Team will help you prepare for and find placements.
