Ancient History GCSE

This interesting Ancient History course will help you understand and evaluate written material, as well as developing your skills to research, organise and present arguments. You will also develop your written and oral communication, expressing yourself concisely and fluently.

You will study some fascinating periods including: The Persian Empire, 559-465 BC, under Cyrus the Great, Cambyses II, Darius I and Xerxes I; The foundations of Rome: From Kingship to Republic, 753-440BC, focusing on the Kings of Rome and the early Roman Republic. You will also study a choice of Alexander the Great, Hannibal or Cleopatra.

Entry requirements

Grade 3/D in English language. Previous study of the ancient world or classical languages is not required but you need self-discipline and motivation to undertake the reading, research and writing required in the course.

Future career and study opportunities

This GCSE course will lay a solid foundation for you to progress to an A-Level in Ancient History, History, Classical Civilisation or any Humanities, English or Languages subjects. Ancient History also complements languages, Classical Civilisation and History.

This course does not contain a specific work experience component but many of the skills you will learn are essential to employability. If needed, our Employability Team can help you find local work placements that will support the course.
