The purpose of the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is to enhance the skills developed from the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting qualification.

The Level 3 Diploma in Accounting offers technical training in accounting and is ideal for anyone wishing to pursue or progress their career in accountancy or finance, and enabling students to maximise opportunities in their current or new employment. By studying for this qualification, students will acquire professional accountancy and finance skills that will be useful throughout their careers.

Candidates study units including:

• developing financial accounting knowledge through processing year-end adjustments and preparing financial statements for sole traders and partnerships

• applying management accounting techniques to make appropriate decisions within the organisation

• indirect tax (VAT) computations and regulations as well as basic payroll processes

• considering the wider business environment.

The Diploma in Accounting is a competency based Education and Training Scheme offered by The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the largest dedicated professional body for qualified accounting technicians.

The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting requires a Total Qualification time of 620 hours and Guided Learning hours of 400 hours.

The course is divided into four units:

  • Financial Accounting: Preparing Financial Statements - This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge for making year-end adjustments, producing an extended trial balance and preparing financial statements for sole traders and partnerships.

  • Management Accounting Techniques - This unit considers different costing methods as well as applying spreadsheet skills.

  • Tax Processes for Businesses - The unit focusses on indirect tax (VAT) computations, processes and regulations. The unit also covers payroll in relation to PAYE and NIC.

  • Business Awareness - This unit considers the wider aspects of business, as well as introducing basic economic theory and applying this within the accounting environment.

  • New College Swindon has had many years’ experience of running AAT courses with excellent pass rates which are well above the national average.

    Students are given tutorial support on a regular basis and may take advantage of the many learning facilities that the College has to offer, including internet access and Microsoft 365.

    Entry requirements

    Ideally, students should have completed AAT Level 2 and have a good understanding of double entry bookkeeping. However, you can enrol straight onto this level 3 course if you hold e.g. a degree, and are used to the level of commitment needed.

    It is recommended to take the free skillcheck offered by the AAT www.aat.org.uk/skillcheck to ensure that you are entering at the right level, if you are seeking to enter straight onto the level 3 course.

    Once you have done this; complete the enrolment form and take it to Part-Time Admissions.

    Future career and study opportunities

    After completion of the AAT Diploma in Accounting course, you may wish to progress onto the AAT Diploma in Professional Accounting (Level 4).

    Fees Information

    Costs (course fees attract National Skills Funding*, where appropriate).

    In addition to the course tuition fee which is £2,000, prospective students need to be aware of the following extra and approximate costs:

    • To Join AAT, Registration fee £228

    • This is for the life of the qualification not per annum

    • Course books approx. £100

    National Skills Funding to cover the cost of this course may be available if you meet any of the below criteria:

    • You are over 19 and do not already hold a Level 3 qualification

    • You are unemployed (regardless of existing Level 3 qualifications)

    • You earn less than the current National Living Wage (regardless of existing Level 3 qualifications)
