Physics GCSE

This course deals with matters as diverse as how to wire a plug to how the universe was created! Generally, you should have a curiosity about how the natural world and the man-made world work, and the ability to put together different ideas to produce logical conclusions.

You will watch video clips and use a range of textbooks, worksheets and IT skills. You will also design experiments, make measurements, present data and draw conclusions.

Course content includes: Energy; Electricity; Particle model of matter; Atomic structure’ Forces; Waves’ Magnetism and electromagnetism; Space physics.

Physics specification: AQA GCSE Physics (8463).

Entry requirements

A GCSE at grade 4/C in Core Science or grade 3/D in Additional Science/Physics, grade 3/D in Combined Science/Physics.

Future career and study opportunities

Achieving a grade 4 will enable you to take BTEC Applied Science, and with grade 6 you could go on to A Level Physics (along with a grade 6/B in GCSE Maths). A Level Physics is needed for Physics and Engineering degrees, and GCSE Physics is needed for some medical-related degree courses such as Radiology.

Work experience/Careers Extra

This course does not contain a specific work experience component, but has other activities to help you develop employability skills. If you would like to undertake a work placement alongside your studies our Employability Team can help.

Additional resources/costs

You will be expected to supply your own stationery and you may want to purchase a textbook. You may also be asked to contribute to any courses and visits in which you take part.
