If you’d like to gain new skills and knowledge or refresh existing practices, then a distance learning qualification could be the answer. Our courses enable you to boost your career with a nationally recognised qualification even if you don’t have the time to attend training sessions. Most courses take approximately 12 weeks to complete.

Entry requirements

  • These courses are fully funded by the Government and to qualify, you must have been resident in England for the last three years and be an EU citizen. You must also be 19 years old at the start of the academic year.
  • You must be 19 + and hold at least a full level 2 qualification (5 GCSEs, Level 2 NVQ Diploma, BTEC Level 2…)
  • You must have a minimum of Level 1 Literacy
  • Distance Learning isn’t for everyone. If at your enrolment we feel that this mode of study may not be quite right for you, we will help you to find the one that is. If you are local to Swindon, we may suggest learning using workbooks.
  • You must not reside in any of the following areas:
    - Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
    - Greater Manchester
    - Greater London
    - Liverpool City Region
    - Tees Valley
    - West of England
    - West Midlands

  • Free
  • However, if you do not complete your course, you will be charged £125 to cover administration and learning material costs.
  • For further career guidance, the National Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance to help you make decisions on learning, training and work opportunities. This service offers confidential and impartial advice and is supported by qualified careers advisers.

Awareness of Mental Health Problems

This mental health training course aims to provide the knowledge about a range of different mental health issues and covers causes of these issues as well as how mental health problems can be managed and treated.

Understanding Children & Young People’s Mental Health

This course will equip you with a detailed understanding of mental health conditions including depression and anxiety, the legislation and guidance surrounding mental health, risk factors that may affect mental well-being and how to build resilience against these, and the impact mental health concerns may have on young people and others.

Understanding Autism

Throughout this qualification you will gain an understanding of the spectrum used to assert the height of particular autistic conditions, as well as how they can affect people in a myriad of ways. As well as exploring the importance of using a person-centred approach to provide support, you will also understand how to use appropriate communication skills and positive behaviour techniques which encourage individuals with ASCs to lead fulfilling and independent lives.

This course is suitable for those looking to develop an understanding of autism, the principles of supporting individuals affected and gaining the skills required to ensure they can best live as independently as possible. This course will be of great benefit if you are currently working, or are looking to work, with individuals who have an ASC.

Understanding Behaviour that Challenges

This qualification aims to explore possible causes which could explain why people behave as they do, helping you to develop your understanding and deal with these situations in an appropriate way. You will look at the impact and possible justification for these behaviours, considering what the root cause could be. This course will equip you with pro-active strategies to support positive behaviour.

Understanding Behaviour that Challenges in Children

This qualification will provide you with a detailed understanding of behaviour that challenges in children, including how such behaviour can be assessed and the avoidance techniques that can help minimise the effects of behaviour that challenges. You will look at how different coexisting conditions, such as a learning disability, a mental health condition, sensory issues and autism can impact on behaviour that challenges and how to support those children who experience these complex behaviours.

You can study this course to gain an understanding of specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). This nationally accredited qualification gives those who are working, or intending to work, in settings such as sport and recreation, exercise and fitness, hospitality and catering or healthcare, an understanding of nutrition and health to support their role in the workplace.

The purpose of this qualification is to support anyone who is responsible for the safeguarding of people and for helping prevent radicalisation.
