New College Basketball Academy Stuns Millfield to Advance in National U19s DYNAMIK School’s Cup

In a thrilling last-32 clash of the National U19s School Cup, New College Basketball Academy (NCS) edged out Millfield Independent School in a dramatic finish, securing a spot in the round of 16 with a last-second three-pointer from captain Ridley Pitts.

It was a slow start for NCS, as Millfield applied early pressure, taking control in the first quarter. However, NCS found their rhythm in the second, delivering a dominant performance to establish a 13-point lead at halftime.

Millfield refused to back down, rallying in the third quarter to erase the deficit and tie the game heading into the final period. The fourth quarter became a tense, back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads. With just eight seconds left on the clock, Millfield held a two-point advantage, seemingly on the brink of victory.

But with time winding down, Pitts rose to the occasion, draining a clutch three-pointer to seal the win and send NCS through to the next round and the final 16 in the country. The dramatic victory cements NCS’s reputation as a rising force in basketball within the area and the good work done to qualify initially from the group stage of this competition.

Wednesday 5th Feb, will see both the 1st & 2nd teams return to AoC league action.

Igniting a Love for Literacy: Empowering Students Through Reading

The NCS #BookTok bookshelf launched in November, opened by Local MP and Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, and donated by the National Literacy Trust in Swindon thanks to a partnership with TikTok.

NCS student, Freya, recently became a Youth Literacy Champion working with the National Literacy Trust in Swindon to promote reading to young people at NCS by personally curating a bookshelf of titles that will inspire her peers. She is supporting the charity’s mission to empower children and young people in Swindon with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

The New College Swindon #BookTok Bookshelf is one in twenty bookshelves popping up in communities across England, giving young people much needed access to books and capturing the power of TikTok to inspire reading for pleasure.

Freya is currently working in the Learning Resource Centre at Queens Drive Campus (LRC) alongside her studies and she has always had a passion for reading. She says, “It has been so humbling to see the positive impact this bookshelf has made on the young people at NCS. I’m so proud to have been a part of something with such a prominent focus on helping others experience the joy of reading.”:

Organiser of the event and NCS Learning Resource Centre Manager, Lee Hancock he said: “Our #BookTok Bookshelf aims to introduce young readers to books that have resonated on social media. It offers a window to diverse worlds and voices in fiction, encouraging further exploration. Most importantly, we hope this initiative will spark and nurture a lifelong love of reading.”

The reveal of the bookshelf was followed by a roundtable in which various topics surrounding TikTok and reading were discussed, including “the impact the BookTok community have on reading and literature”, “the possible reasons fewer young people are reading for pleasure”, “local challenges with engaging teenagers in Swindon with accessing books/reading”

Anish Harrison, Manager for the National Literacy Trust in Swindon, said: “Our partnership with TikTok harnesses the appeal of the platform – and its ability to connect and inspire young people – in order to motivate them to read for pleasure. At a time when young people’s reading for enjoyment is at an all-time low, it’s never been more important!

“It was brilliant to launch our latest #BookTok Bookshelf at New College Swindon, with titles chosen and curated by young people with their peers in mind. We hope that students at the college find something that will interest and inspire them, and that it may spark a lifelong enjoyment of reading.”

Exciting Developments Underway at North Star Campus

The new two-story extension at New College Swindon is well underway, marking an exciting milestone for the campus. Once completed, the extension will provide a modern link between the existing Phoenix and Lyra buildings, creating a state-of-the-art space for students and staff. Over the past few months, major progress has been made on site. Initial works involved piling operations and groundwork preparation, including a two-metre reduced dig to clear buried obstacles such as old foundations and railway remnants. Live services, including drainage systems, were successfully diverted to accommodate the new build, and a fire exit was re-routed to ensure continued safety. Construction students at the College have had the unique opportunity to visit the site, guided by Senior Site Manager, Nyki Haylett. These visits offered students hands-on insight into real-world construction processes, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry experience.

Looking ahead, the project will hit key milestones in 2024 and 2025. The ground floor slab installation was scheduled for late November 2024, followed by the 1st floor slab in December 2024. Roof works will be completed by April 2025, with final project handover expected in August 2025. Students, staff, and the wider community can look forward to a fresh and inspiring space that reflects the College’s commitment to growth and innovation.

As part of the ongoing works, eye-catching site hoardings have been installed, showcasing visuals of the planned development and celebrating the College’s vision for the future. These vibrant designs not only provide information but also create excitement around the transformation taking shape. Stay tuned for further updates as Project Caseus progresses towards completion – a major step forward for New College Swindon!
