Languages Fest took place at New College last week. Local Secondary Schools, St Joseph’s and Dorcan Academy attended. Speakers from GCHQ visited and delivered a talk about their organisation, role as linguists and the place for languages in the workplace. A beginner’s Arabic class was also held, led by a GCHQ linguist, and a beginner’s Polish class was delivered by Ewa Salik, a member of the English & Languages team at New College. A treasure hunt was put on and students had the opportunity to explore the College, looking for multilingual clues. They then gathered for lunch and a round of languages puzzles, quizzes and prize-giving.
The idea of the day was to give students a sense of where continuing their language studies could take them, in terms of employment opportunities and transferable skills, as well as getting a feel for learning languages outside of exams and syllabus.
