This week, English and Communication pathway learners had the opportunity to attend a talk from Journalist and Media Consultancy expert, Fiona Scott.
Fiona has been a Journalist for 31 years and explained that she got her first industry job working on a local weekly newspaper in Keynsham and never looked back. ITV and The Swindon Advertiser are some of the names on her CV and she has also worked on a whole series of freelance projects, including work for BBC The One Show, Flog It, Total Guide to Swindon and Business Exchange. Fiona now runs her own media consultancy business.
Learners were given an insight into the Journalism industry, with Fiona sharing her experiences of what a career in the field is like and what skills you need in order to succeed. Different pathways into the industry were explored, as well as tips on building a CV and work experience and using social media as a business tool.
Fiona said: “I thoroughly enjoy talking to young people as they are the future - sounds corny, however it's true. I think it's valuable for young people who are at the start of their professional journey to hear from someone who has 'been there and done that'. They then have a clearer idea of the reality of that sector, the process of how, in my case, the media works and hopefully it inspires them to take some action. Success often stems not just from talent; it stems from showing up!"
