The Dance and Performing Arts students of New College are currently working hard in preparation for their first dance performance of the year - the annual Funky Fusion Show.

Every year students from the Level 2 and Level 3 Dance and Performing Arts courses prepare diverse and innovative dance work across multiple dance styles. This year’s Funky Fusion Show will consist of a range of exciting dance pieces across a variety of styles including Contemporary, Jazz and Urban dance.

The department prides itself on developing dancers and performers in a multitude of ways. In preparation for the performance, students are encouraged to work professionally within an educational environment. They not only focus on building confidence in technique and performance, but develop their creative minds through the themes of the choreography itself.

The dancers and lecturers have been researching and developing ideas connected to diverse cultures or human rights issues, focusing on creating dance work that is dynamic, exciting and topical. This week Level 2 Dance students enjoyed a visit from Sergeant Mark Denman, who demonstrated how to hold a dummy rifle and the art of carrying a 16kg Bergen in preparation for a Military inspired piece.

Sergeant Mark Denman commented, “I think the piece that the students are working on is awesome, it’s really positive to see. There are a lot of misconceptions about how the Army conducts its training; many think it’s all about shouting, but that’s not the case. The Army tries to coach and mentor its Soldiers through Training.”
