Student Services
Money Matters & EMAs
Courses are normally free if you are under 19 at the start of your programme, or under 25 and have not already studied for a programme of qualifications at Level 2 or Level 3.
You will find information on any extra expenses such as deposits for books or special equipment needed, in the InfoSheets, and in your Course Guides at the start of your programme.
Student Resources Contribution
We ask all students for £35 per year towards resources at New College. This optional contribution directly benefits all students. Examples in 2009 included contributions towards a College Youth Worker and a College Nurse
EMAs
Educational Maintenance Allowances are payments to many 16- and 17-year-olds who continue their education after Year 11. They are worth between £10 and £30 per week.
You may be eligible – ask for details at your interview.
You should apply for your EMA in May or June to make sure that your payments begin promptly when you start your programme in September. You need a bank account. Your school or the Connexions service will have an application pack. The national EMA helpline is 0808 101 6219 view their website here.
Learner Support Fund
Can help you if your family’s circumstances make it difficult for them to support your educational costs fully. If you live away from home, or are over 18, your own financial position is the key factor. If you receive an EMA you are only likely to get support if your course involves exceptional expenses.
New College Student Fund
All students can apply to this fund which is funded by the Student Resources Contribution. Grants or loans are available to individuals or groups – perhaps to support a sports team, or improve student facilities.
Adult Learner Grants
Adult Learner Grants are available for Over-19s, these are similar to an EMA. Special eligibility conditions apply – contact Admissions for details. More information on ALG can be found on the Directgov website click here
