We have a number of services that will help you get the most from your College course:

Money Matters

Your courses are normally free if you are under 19 at the start of your programme, or under 25 and have not already studied for a programme of qualifications at Level 2 or Level 3.

You will find information on any extra expenses such as deposits required for books or any special equipment needed, in the InfoSheets and in your Course Guides at the start of your programme.

You can apply for an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) – www.direct.gov.uk/EMA - or for assistance from the College’s Learner Support Fund to help pay for expenses such as transport, books and equipment.

Open Learning Centre

The Open Learning Centre is here for all students who want to improve their IT, English or numeracy skills. You may need to develop your spelling or punctuation, get help with structuring essays, or need extra support with fractions and percentages.

Whatever you need, our friendly tutors in the Open Learning Centre are here to help.

Additional Support

Do you have a medical condition, poor sight or hearing, dyslexia or other learning needs? Has your education been interrupted or did you have a lot of time off school? We can help!

Make sure that when you apply to the College you tell us about these needs by ticking the right boxes on the Application Form, and mention it at your interview.

After your Guidance Interview we will arrange a meeting to discuss how we can help you. We can even start working with you before you start College! The Additional Support Team can help you in class or in individual support sessions.

It’s also important to tell us if you had special examination arrangements at school – such as the use of a laptop or extra time. We can make similar arrangements for you.

Your Access

Our buildings and facilities are available to all students. We have resources to improve accessibility for all, including reserved parking and lifts to all areas of the main building and Sports Centre. Details can be found in our Accessibility Statement. Please ask for a copy or view it here

Your Personal Tutor

You will meet your Personal Tutor when you arrive at New College in September. He or she will help you put together and maintain your Personal Learning Programme and will keep you up to date with College matters, help you through the UCAS or job application process, and be available to advise you on the problems of life both inside and outside College. Your Personal Tutor may be one of your course tutors, and is your first port of call if you have any queries, as he or she can often sort things out quickly.

Your Childcare

Two funds are available to help you with your childcare costs while you are studying at College, depending on your age and circumstances. For more details, please contact Student Services.

Imagine is a purpose-built nursery located behind New College. They are open from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm daily. They offer flexible childcare for babies from three months to school age. Call 01793 542591 to arrange an informal visit or to discuss your needs.

Your Careers Advice

Your Personal Tutor can help you choose a career or Higher Education course. The College’s Careers Adviser can provide extra advice to help you decide your best route into work or university. We have a Careers Adviser available every day during term time.

A Friendly Ear

Counsellors in College are here to help you if you have any personal problems that affect your learning. They will listen and support you – and the service is completely confidential.

The JustAsk service is a helpline for information, solutions and guidance at College, giving advice and help on a wide range of issues - housing and finance, helping you make changes in your timetable or programme - or just being a friendly ear.

Or you can telephone the Counselling Team or email them at: counselling@newcollege.ac.uk.
