They have read a wide range of subjects, from Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Cambridge) to PPE (Politics, Philosophy, Economics) (Oxford) and Archaeology.
If you have done well at GCSE and are likely to gain high grades at A Level, a course at Oxford or Cambridge could be right for you.
We provide special advice to help you with the application and interview process. We encourage you to visit the universities, and we invite former New College students now studying there to return and speak to you.
Jonathan Haas, 21, is studying Economics at the University of Oxford
“When I first applied to Oxford I didn’t think I had any chance of getting an offer. The clout of Oxford is so big, if you have an opportunity to apply you have to give it a go. I received the most help from New College’s head of Economics, Jason Gray. I owe Jason a lot. The deadline for applications to Oxford and Cambridge is earlier than the normal deadline so you have to be organised and have everything sorted quite early on, but Jason helped me with all of that.
Once I’d done the interview I felt quite confident; I know that I make a better impression in person and I felt that the interview went really well. Once I got the offer I felt a lot of drive to get the results. It would have been disappointing to get an offer but not get in.”
Mohit Varma, 19, is studying Economics and Management at the University of Oxford
“I was very, very happy about getting an offer to study at Oxford; it made all the hard work worthwhile. I found the application process a little stressful but its all worth it and it was a good experience. Oxford has a reputation for being the best, and all of the industry leaders in my subject are lecturers there, so it was the obvious choice for me to have the best opportunity to be successful. After my degree I’d like to become an investment banker or a management consultant.”
Mohit studied Further Maths, Economics and Biology, having completed A Levels in Maths and Business Studies in his first year at New College.
Simon Iremonger is studying Computer Science at the University of Cambridge
Simon returned to education as an adult learner, received A* level marks in Electronics A Level and AS Physics and an A in Further Maths
“Ever since I visited Cambridge and realised it was an achievable goal, I’ve been working as a man-on-a-mission, and I found out what I needed to do and got on with it.”
