Posted on August 24, 2017

New College Swindon may be best known for its great A Level and Level 3 Vocational results but today 1198 learners will be collecting their GCSE results.  These qualifications are increasingly popular at New College with the number of entries for 2017 up by 5% on last year, with an improved pass rate of 99.4%, up by 0.9%.

The College offers a wide range of GCSE subjects to all of its learners; whether they are A-Level or BTEC students trying a new subject or improving their Maths or English grades, adult students taking extra qualifications for interest or to improve their job prospects or learners on the dedicated GCSE programme itself.

71% of entries were in the core subjects of Maths and English, which are so critical to CVs, University prospects and job success. Many learners of all ages are retaking these subjects to improve their grades.  It’s still a real struggle for many but 305 more now have the 9-4 (A* to C) equivalent grades in Maths and 375 in English, which is a massive 47% increase in numbers compared to last year. There is a 99.7% pass rate for both English and Maths.

Students achieved a 100% pass rate in 22 out of 30 subjects including Ancient History, Astronomy, Photography, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Chinese, Electronic, English Literature, Environmental Management, Film Studies, French, Geography, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Law, Music, Physics, Sociology, Spanish, and Statistics.

Our provision for Pre-16 students continues to bloom and grow. There were 225 GCSE entries (an increase of 8% on last year) amongst this cohort, with a pass rate of 99.1% which is a 1 percentage point increase from last year.  They achieved a 100% pass rate in 22 out of 24 subjects, including English and Maths. Level 2 vocational courses with a 100% pass rate, include Award in Creative Craft (Drawing & Painting), Award in Creative Craft (Art & Design), Award in Creative Craft (Textile), Certificate in Creative Craft (Media Make-up), Certificate in Achieving Excellence in Vocational Skills, Award in Home Cooking Skills, Award in Food Safety in Catering, Diploma in Performing Arts, Extended Certificate Acting, Diploma in Photography, Extended Certificate in Public Services, First Award in Public Services and Diploma in Sport.

402 of the entries were for our 19+ adult students studying GCSE subjects. The overall pass rate across all subjects was 99.7% with all adult learners passing GCSE English.

New College Principal Graham Taylor commented“Today’s results are a great achievement. The learners’ success reflects their hard work and enthusiasm and is a tribute to the teaching, support and pastoral care provided by all staff here.

We are particularly delighted by our Maths and English results. It’s fantastic to see students who have struggled with these subjects in the past now achieve their grade 4/Cs with us.

We want to help our students succeed, not just in exams, but in achieving their personal goals.

We congratulate all of our students who received GCSE results today and wish them all the very best for the future.”
