College’s annual Fresher’s Fair welcoming new students to the college took
place on Thursday. Many companies, both internal and external attended the fun
filled event which was packed with food, freebies and fab people! Students were
able to get advice, enter competitions and find out about job opportunities,
all whilst taking part in various games and activities throughout the
College representatives from the nursing team, counselling team, NC Ambassadors, Sports Centre and many more were on hand to offer support and advice to students. Students and staff from Distinction Salons were painting nails and promoting the wide range of hair and beauty services they provide.
External organisations offering advice included Health Watch Swindon and Thamesdown Buses who were talking to students about their transport options to the college and the discounted fare available.
Thamesdown weren’t the only ones offering discounts to students; Cineworld were promoting the benefits of using their student ID to get cheaper cinema tickets and the Wyvern Theatre & Arts Centre were promoting their ‘£5 StudentStandby’ ticket scheme whereby full-time students can purchase unsold tickets for just £5 one hour prior to any performance. They also advertised job opportunities to students interested in getting a part-time job. The Army were also providing students with opportunities for weekend work to add variety to their experience and give them different options.
GlamoRose Cakes, who have a shop in Old Town, was a popular stall featuring innovative handmade biscuit cupcakes such as the jammy dodger, the pink party ring cupcake and the Custard Cream. It’s not a surprise that their stand often had a queue of people admiring the delicious treats!
A number of organisations were there to raise awareness of issues within the community such as; Threshold Housing Link who challenged the students to ‘Build a bed and win a mystery star prize’. This competition engaged students whilst highlighting a significant issue in the local area regarding homelessness.
Enrichment activities were also a feature of the event with Younique Travel Adventures giving students the chance to sign up for next year’s summer volunteer trip to Kenya!
For sports enthusiasts, there were different companies who may have peaked their interest. These include representatives from the New College Sports Centre, Swindon Speedway, Swindon Storm and Play Football.
Various games and competitions were taking place to entertain students, with prizes including speedway tickets, theatre tickets, confectionary, an Adidas football sunglasses, stationary, bags and more! Not to mention a load of free merchandise and goodies being handed out.
All in all, a great event which hopefully showed students how they can make the most of their time at New College and have the fullest experience possible!
