Shane Comb, a former Kingsdown School pupil, initially studied a Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport at New College. He then started a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration with Wiltshire County Football Association. Having completed the Apprenticeship, he now has a permanent job there as a Governance Administrator.
“When I was approached about the possibility of doing an Apprenticeship it fitted with what I wanted to do next as I was ready to start to work. During it, I learnt about policies and protocols relevant to football refereeing and I was able to attend many training courses including ones at Wembley.
Throughout my Apprenticeship I was supported by New College - my tutor would come to visit me to assess the work that I had completed and give me constructive feedback. By working, I have gained skills in administration and customer service and my confidence has grown.
After I had finished my Apprenticeship, Wiltshire FA employed me on a permanent contract and I am looking forward to the opportunity to grow in my role and be given more responsibilities and training. I am lead contact for the Wiltshire Referee Academy and Mentoring programme.
I would definitely recommend doing an Apprenticeship to others, it is a good opportunity for those who want to work after studying still with the support of New College.”
Jodie Jordan, Governance Manager at Wiltshire County FA and Shane’s manager, also had good words to say about her experience of employing an Apprentice.
“Having an Apprentice has been a great experience for Wiltshire FA. Shane was a star candidate and a real credit to us. He is now a full-time member of staff and an integral part of the team. The Apprenticeship has worked so well for us, we have just started advertising for another Apprentice to join our team.”
