What our staff say about us
What our Staff say about us:
David Domm, Business Studies Lecturer
"I've been a Business Studies lecturer at New College for two years now. I came to the role straight from university and am studying for the Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). The college have been really supportive in helping me to achieve my qualification and my team has been great; I couldn't ask for better colleagues, they've really helped me settle in and supported me in my first two years of teaching.
I really enjoy teaching; it's a very rewarding career. I love working with the young people - it's hard work, but it’s all worth it when you see them achieving good grades and fulfilling their potential."
Melanie Courtney-Holt, English Lecturer
"I joined New College as an English Lecturer in Summer 2008.
The pastoral training at the beginning was excellent. The Student Services team made it clear that their support for Personal Tutors would last far beyond the training sessions so that it feels easy to contact them for help or guidance, however small the issue.
New College students are varied, interested and interesting. I really enjoy their enthusiasm for English. Many of them read widely and write creatively in their spare time. The adult students are inspiring – and an education for me!
The English team are bright, fun and fascinated by their subjects. I could not have asked for better support from them! From the beginning, my colleagues have been generously forthcoming with precise and practical approaches which they combine with kind personal encouragement.
New College is the best educational employer I have worked for. The best characteristic is the genuine commitment to helping students of all backgrounds, abilities and personalities to achieve and even exceed their expectations which is shared by everyone I've met at the College. This is borne out in the 'buzz' of the place. People are always looking for ways of making things even better. The other lovely aspect is that established staff are so welcoming to new staff. When I started, people showed confidence in me but were great at balancing this against supportive realism where needed."
Donna Reader, Receptionist – Customer Services
"My job role and title is Receptionist - Customer Services.
I have worked at New college for sixteen years, which has fitted in well around my family.
As first point of contact, the receptionists are the mirrors of the organisation - first impressions last! I enjoy working as part of a team in a supportive environment.
Staff are encouraged to attend Professional Development courses, to regularly update our skills and qualifications
The best thing about working at New College is the "people" aspect in a busy, buzzy, caring, environment, thinking on your feet and going with the flow, with a good attitude, a sense of humour and common sense approach and going the extra mile with a "Smile".
I have made some wonderful friendships at New College and long may they continue."
John Lazenbury, Lecturer – ICT, eLearning Resources Administrator – Business and Associate Lecturer – General Studies
"I have two roles; one as a college administrator and the other as a lecturer, eLearning Recourses Administrator and Associate Lecturer in ICT, Business and General Studies respectively. Over the years I've worked in five Curriculum Teams including Community Education, helping people in the community with developing their ICT skills on courses such as First Steps back to Work and ICT for the Third Age. I also developed and ran my own `Computing for Family Historians' course as an evening class.
This is the longest I've ever worked for an employer, which I think is evidence of how happy I am at New College. I particularly enjoy my role as an eLearning Resources Administrator, which involves managing the day-to-day running of Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment, and providing training to colleagues to enhance teaching and learning.
The flexibility and supportive attitude of New College's Senior Management Team has allowed me to remain working full time, despite becoming physically disabled a few years ago and now being a wheelchair user. I have a `cross-college' role so I see the whole picture of college life and it's like being a member of one large family team. The help that staff offer one another illustrates the friendly and supportive community in which we work. New College is one large family, where people help each other with a smile and a good sense of humour."
