Qualifications from the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) are recognised and respected by employers in all sectors of employment. They provide the benchmark standard against which others are compared. NEBOSH qualification provides evidence of real achievement, and New College is delighted to run both the Certificate and Diploma (Part 1) courses.
National Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health
This qualification is designed to help you with your health and safety responsibilities (e.g. managers, supervisors and employee representatives) and to discharge your organisational duties and functions more effectively.
National Diploma Part 1 in Occupational Safety and Health
This award is intended for health and safety practitioners working either in low-risk occupational settings where control strategies are well documented, or as assistants to more highly qualified practitioners.
Course Content and Assessment
These intensive, informative courses run over a series of 1-day workshops, followed by examinations. They are run on a day-release basis to suit the needs of both student and employer. ourses follow the set NEBOSH syllabus and provide a mixture of tutor-led sessions, private study, visits and guest speakers. Teaching is student-centred, with tutor presentations supported by the use of practical exercises, syndicate and group work, video and feedback sessions. We encourage your active participation.
National Certificate
This course covers the following key areas:
- human factors
- risk assessments
- occupational health
- legislation
- safe operations
- fire
- first aid
Diploma Part 1
You will be assessed through coursework and assignments. In addition, you will sit two end-of-course examinations. Topics covered include:
- management of risk
- legal and organisational factors
- the workplace
- work equipment
- agents
The Certificate or Diploma is achieved by successfully completing all the modules over 12 months, including relevant assignments, a practical test, and passing the relevant examinations.
Your Progression
On completing the Certificate you will be eligible for affiliation to the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH). Holders of Diploma Part 1 may apply (subject to meeting experience requirements) for admission to the grade of Technician Safety Practitioner (TechSP) of IOSH, and may wish to progress to the Diploma Part 2.
Entry to the Courses
No prior health and safety knowledge is required, but you must be able to write short reports. You can be admitted to the programme without formal academic qualifications, provided that there is evidence that you have the necessary background and motivation to succeed. Applicants are interviewed by the Course Leader in order to identify the most appropriate course of study.
