What is HE?

Higher Education is another name for degree level education. Some people go on to do a degree level course straight from A Levels, while others may have a break from study and come back to it several years later. Higher Education courses aren’t just offered at university – you can study at your local college, in an evening class, or even at your place of work.

Why should I study?

Higher Education is an investment in your future, expanding your horizons and improving your career prospects and earning potential. Throughout their lifetime, graduates typically earn far more than their non-graduate counterparts and, for an increasing number of careers, a Higher Education qualification is a condition of entry and/or progression. Our past HE students have gone on to a range of different careers, including teaching, lecturing, management, business, childcare and nursing management.

What should I study?

Your choice of subject will depend on what you want to do with it. Think about how HE will be of benefit to you in the future – your career and work choices, personal development, enjoyment of a subject, further progression and qualifications. Find out as much as you can. Visiting the college and chatting to the tutors will also help you to find the right course for you.

Do I have the right qualifications?

If you don’t have the qualifications you need to start your degree level course, don’t panic. New College has a very successful Access to HE programme which will bridge the gap between your current qualifications or experience and a degree level course. Our Access to Higher Education course can completed in just one year (or two years if you choose our flexible part time option). The Access course is a nationally-recognised qualification which will enable you to apply for a degree course at any college or university, including New College.
