How will Apprenticeships benefit my business?

Apprenticeships are designed to help your employees reach a high level of competency and performance. They are considered to be a proven way of dealing with both current and future workforce issues. They enable employers to attract high-quality recruits and improve the skills and productivity of existing employees.

Motivated people

Apprentices are motivated and keen to learn. By offering Apprenticeships you will find it easier to recruit and retain able young people.

Improved productivity

Apprenticeships equip young people with the skills and knowledge to do their job better. Because they are motivated, they work harder and more effectively for your business.

Relevant free training

Apprenticeships are designed by organisations in your sector. This means the training is relevant and tailored to the needs of your sector by people who genuinely understand what you do.

Health & Safety

As a provider of Apprenticeship Programmes, New College has a contractual obligation to ensure that all of its learners are working in healthy and safe environments. Therefore, the Apprenticeship Team may take a health and safety appraisal of your company, and any concerns will be identified to you. Subsequent monitoring visits of the working environment will be undertaken at regular intervals.

Safety Policy and Risk Assessment

As a general guideline your company should have a statement about a commitment to health and safety at work. There should also be assessment of the potential risks within the working environment. If your firm employs 5 or more people these should be in a written format and available to members of staff to read.

What your learner needs to know about:

  • Tidiness and hygiene
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Working with animals
  • Moving about in the workplace
  • Lifting and carrying
  • Working at heights
  • Compressed air
  • Electricity
  • Machinery
  • Hazardous substances
  • Fire
  • Display Screen Equipment (DSE)
  • Handtools and knives
  • First Aid

The learner's induction at work should cover the safety aspects of his/her particular workplace. The learner will also cover aspects of health and safety related to the vocational area as part of the NVQ programme.
