New College Swindon celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a concert for long-standing staff members and representatives from Swindon’s business community.
Local businesses and community members joined the college for a gala evening, and were entertained by some of New College's most talented students.
New College's fashion students put on a stunning display of their creations, in a preview to the popular fashion show which runs at the college each year.
New College started taking students in the academic year 1984-5 with just 400 young learners, and has since grown to over 3,000. By diversifying into adult community learning and business training, New College now has over 10,000 learners in total.
Graham Taylor, Principal of New College said: “New College has great staff, governors and learners. They have helped to make it the success that it is today and something that the town can be proud of.
"We will continue to work hard to help all of our communities and we look forward to serving our learners in the next 25 years."
Four Swindon students studying the Young Apprenticeship course in Health and Social Care have been rewarded by New College.
Emma Willson has won £100 in WHSmith vouchers and been named New College’s ‘Student of the Term’ for her willingness to contribute towards college life, and perseverance in her studies.
Fresh from her appearances on Mock the Week, Have I Got News For You and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, comedienne Jo Caulfield will be performing in Swindon in aid of New College’s community outreach project, Let Me Be Frank.
New College public services students are celebrating following their win of the WorldSkills Uniformed Public Services competition. The students were up against teams from 23 colleges from across the South, and are now in with a chance of competing in the national final.
New College students are gearing up to blow Swindon away in the New College Has Talent variety competition on the 30th April. Students have been rehearsing a variety of acts from singing to dancing to comedy acts, and are now putting the finishing touches together before performing in the final.
New College's 25th anniversary year will see it become one of the host centres for WorldSkills UK; a national competition that invites young people to compete in over 50 different vocational challenges. Teams from over 20 colleges will compete on the 29th April in the Uniformed Services competition, to win a coveted place at the national final, in the hope of going on to represent the UK in WorldSkills' international competition in 2011.
Joe Ward has been named New College's Student of the Month after impressing his tutors and employer with his determination to succeed, and rapid progression since starting the college in September as an Apprentice.

Local training company Fast Forward will be showcasing its extensive range of courses and training programmes to help Swindon people combat the recession, at the Career and Jobs Live Exhibition, on Thursday 11th March.
Sainsbury's has teamed up with New College Swindon to provide Customer Service training to Diploma students currently studying the Specialist Diploma in Business, Administration and Finance (Level 3). As part of this exciting project students will be focusing on health and safety, food hygiene, legal issues relating to food and licensed products and how to meet the needs of customers. The group will also take part in customer service investigations and will report their findings to Sainsbury’s management in the form of a presentation.
After years of teaching apprentices from local companies, New College Swindon has decided to take advantage of its own success by taking on and training apprentices of its own.
