Bus Travel
New College is very well served by public transport routes operated by Thamesdown, Stagecoach and Wilts & Dorset bus companies. This includes routes from Wootton Bassett, Wanborough, Shrivenham and Faringdon as well as all areas of Swindon. Details of their routes and times are available on their websites:
www.thamesdown-transport.co.uk
www.stagecoachbus.com
www.wdbus.co.uk
You can also use the Traveline South West website: www.travelinesw.com
Students may need to change buses in Swindon town centre depending on their journey.
New Routes
Changes to Thamesdown Transport's routes mean that the 175 and 176 Thamesdown services have ceased to operate and the 177 route has changed to the Thamesdown service 53. This will cover Cricklade , Purton, Westlea and Ramleaze).
We have arranged for Hatts Coaches to run a service to New College. Timings are below:
| Pick up / Drop off point | Pickup time |
|---|---|
| Taw Hill (Tawny Owl) | 08:00 |
| Oakhurst (Hartington Road) | 08:05 |
| Haydon Wick (Asda Walmart) | 08:12 |
| Abbey Meads (Village Centre) | 08.17 |
| Groundwell West (Cricklade Road) | 08.20 |
| New College (Queens Drive) | 08.35 |
Students wishing to use this service will need to have valid Thamesdown Transport travel passes and students should always keep their New College ID Card on their person. As students finish their lessons at different times each day we have not arranged for a return journey for this service but the areas are well served by public transport via the town centre.
Wilts & Dorset Buses are also starting a new service on routes 95/96 from Pewsey, Marlborough, Ogbourne St George and Chiseldon to New College which operates throughout the day. Details of timings are on their website.
Bus Passes
Students should apply early to their relevant council (Wiltshire or Swindon) if they need the annual passes. In the Swindon area many students prefer the flexibility of the discounted monthly Thamesdown Student Travel Pass or Travel Pass Plus which allows unlimited journeys for under 19s in the permitted areas. Details are available on the leaflets available from college or the Travel Shop in Fleming Way.
Wiltshire County Council bus passes for some students may only provide journeys to Swindon Town Centre. This relates to their designated college policy which is outlined on their Student Transport website: www.wstan.info Students may therefore have to pay for the journey to and from New College. In this case they should ask at Student Services for details of our Assisted Travel Scheme and bring their bus tickets into Student Services. We ask that they use the cheapest option which is likely to be the monthly travel pass. It is intended that students should not have to pay any more than the cost of an annual Wiltshire pass but is subject to availability of funds in college.
Students living outside Swindon or Wiltshire
If you live outside Swindon or Wiltshire, you should apply as soon as possible to your own local education authority for support with your transport costs. They all have schemes but also operate their own eligibility criteria and have limits on available funds.
If you are unsuccessful with your request for support, you should ask at Student Services about our Assisted Travel Scheme and you should keep all tickets you have bought.
Student Services can help you with all transport to college enquiries.
